Take a tour of Coal Oil Point Reserve!

Take a two-hour walk with a trained tour leader through the Reserve's eight ecosystems: from sandy beach to the Devereux Slough to a restored coastal dune system.  Learn about the Reserve's cultural history and its current restoration projects.  You will enjoy glimpses of rare and endangered species-such as White Tailed Kite, Western Snowy Plover, and the Wandering Skipper butterfly-that make their home at the Reserve.

Tour dates:

  • The third Sunday of each month from 2:00pm – 4:15pm
  • Tours for community, school or department groups are available upon request seven days a week from 8am – sunset

Reservations for tours are required.  Please contact the Program Coordinator at (805) 893-5092 to reserve a spot on a tour or to schedule a group tour.  Tour reservations are not taken on Saturday and Sunday.

Suggested donation for tours is $5 per person, except for Reserve volunteers and students (of any age).

Tours are a partnership between Coal Oil Point Reserve and Shorelines & Watersheds, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Funding for the tour program is provided by the Coastal Fund and Venoco Inc.

Explore the Reserve at your own pace: Take the Self-Guided Tour!

In April 2009, Coal Oil Point Reserve will launch a Self-Guided Tour.

The tour consists of 18 interpretive placards, which are attached to wooden benches, and 3 interpretive panels along a 3 mile loop on UCSB’s West Campus and Coal Oil Point Reserve. Brochures and formal entrances to the tour can be found at the intersection of Del Playa and Camino Majorca (in Isla Vista), the Sand’s Beach entrance to COPR, and the southern entrance to COPR’s Pond Trail.

A podcast to accompany the Self-Guided Tour can be downloaded HERE (beginning in April 2009).

Numbers on interpretive placards correspond to tracks on the podcast.
